Prestige Hair Extension Aftercare

For any hair extensions brand that you choose, it is highly important that you follow the aftercare instructions specific to that brand.

Our aftercare instructions have been developed from our knowledge and experience of hair extensions production, along with years of product testing in collaboration with highly skilled hair extensionists Jo Stacey and Tom Piper.

Aftercare & Advice

For: Keratin Bonds | Micro Rings | Nano Rings | Ultra Tips | Weaves | Tape Extensions

Thank you for choosing Prestige Hair Extensions Manchester.
Your hair health is of the utmost importance to us, so please read the following carefully and save for future reference.

Your Prestige extensions can be treated much like your own hair—you may wash, dry, straighten, and curl them with care.

⚠️ Please do not wash newly fitted tape or weave extensions for at least 24 hours after fitting.
⚠️ Please do not backcomb your extensions (you may backcomb your own natural hair only).

Washing

• You may wash your own natural hair as often as you wish. If only washing your natural hair, tie extensions into a bun to keep them out of the way.
• We recommend washing the extensions themselves only once or twice per week maximum.
• Always use a professional salon-quality or sulphate-free shampoo. Harsh sulphates found in cheaper shampoos can weaken bonds, tapes, and attachments, reducing the lifespan of your extensions.
• Dry shampoo is ideal between washes.

When washing:

• Always wash under a shower head (avoid baths or sinks).
• Wash your scalp thoroughly, including around all attachments.
• Stroke shampoo in a downward motion through the lengths—never rub or pile the hair up.
• Shampoo twice for best results.
• Sulphate-free shampoos may not lather as much—this is completely normal.
• A 50p-sized amount is usually enough.
• Rinse thoroughly—you now have much more hair than you’re used to.

Conditioning

• Keep conditioner away from the scalp, bonds, rings, tapes, and wefts.
• Apply only from mid-lengths to ends.
• Use a small amount and smooth downward.
• Rinse thoroughly.
• After 6 months+, we recommend occasionally replacing conditioner with a quality hair mask for added nourishment.

Recommended Products

At Prestige Hair Extensions Manchester, we highly recommend using professional products specifically suited to hair extensions.

We proudly stock and recommend the full Mood Vegan & Paraben-Free range in salon, including:

• Shampoo
• Conditioner
• Heat Protection Sprays

We also highly recommend using our professional Boar Bristle Brush brushes, specially chosen for extension hair.

Clients who use these recommended products and brushes often find their extensions stay softer, healthier, and last significantly longer between maintenance appointments.

Please ask your stylist if you would like advice on which products are best for your hair.

Products & Oils

Over time, your natural scalp oils will help nourish your extensions.

If your hair feels dry:

• Apply a small amount of lightweight oil or serum to the ends only.
• Apply at night before plaiting—not in the morning.
• Use only once or twice per week to avoid build-up.

Avoid heavy treatments, oils, or masks that may overload the hair.

Brushing

• Brush your extensions 2–3 times daily to prevent tangling and matting.
• Separate sections gently as you brush.
• Brush carefully from root to tip while supporting the attachment area.
• If brushing wet hair, pat dry first or use a wide-tooth comb on the lengths only.
• Never over-brush wet extensions.

Night-Time Care

• Always wear your hair in a loose plait before bed.
• Never go to sleep with wet hair.
• For added luxury and protection, we recommend a silk pillowcase.

Heat Styling

• Extensions can be curled, straightened, and styled as normal.
• Always use a heat protection spray.
• Avoid excessive heat directly on bonds, tapes, rings, or wefts.

Colouring

• You may colour your own natural hair as normal.
• Please do not bleach extension hair.
• If you wish to colour your extensions, we recommend only using Prestige Hair Extensions Manchester.
• Box dyes can permanently damage extension hair.

Cutting

Cutting extension hair requires specialist training and differs completely from cutting natural hair.

Non-extension specialists may unintentionally damage or over-cut extensions, leading to extra correction costs.

We offer one complimentary re-cut within 2 weeks of fitting if you feel your hair needs adjusting.

Swimming & Holidays

• Keep your hair tied up and out of pool or sea water wherever possible.
• Chlorine, salt, minerals, and sun creams can dry or discolour extension hair—particularly blonde shades.
• We recommend rinsing immediately with clean water after exposure.

Maintenance & Re-Installation

To keep your extensions healthy and your natural hair protected:

• Keratin Bonds / Rings / Ultra Tips: Maintenance every 10–12 weeks
• Weaves / Tapes: Maintenance every 6–8 weeks

Leaving extensions longer than recommended may result in extra maintenance costs.

With regular maintenance, your extension hair can be re-used and enjoyed indefinitely.

⚠️ Extensions must always be removed by a trained professional.

Natural Hair Shedding

It is completely normal to lose around 100 hairs per day.

When wearing extensions, these naturally shed hairs remain trapped until maintenance or removal.

Please do not be alarmed if you see your own hair during removal—this is completely normal.

Repairs

If an extension loosens within 2 weeks of fitting, please contact us and we’ll be happy to help.
